Fleas, Ticks and Other
Bugs
Flea and Tick control is a normal
part of owning a dog. Even though fleas aren't as big of an issue in Arizona
as ticks, it is important that you treat your home and yard with appropriate
pesticides. It is also important for you to examine your dog on a daily
basis to ensure your dog is free from these parasites. Wherever dogs
congregate or walk... the streets, park, your neighborhood, dog shows,
veterinary offices, and, yes, at our doggie daycare, your dog can pick up
these nasty creatures. We highly recommend you obtain a good flea and tick
prevention program from your veterinarian or pet store. We also recommend
you have your dog flea and tick dipped at our facility. We also sell safe
pet products that can help you control these pests at home.
Your dog WILL get fleas and ticks in public
places. The key is regular inspections and appropriate parasite control.
Heart Worm, Lyme Disease, Etc.
Heart worms are parasites transmitted by
mosquitoes. Please consult with your veterinarian concerning appropriate
prevention and treatment options. Left untreated, heart worms can kill your
dog. Lyme Disease is transmitted by ticks, and is also very dangerous.
Again, consult with your veterinarian concerning appropriate prevention and
treatment options.
Dog and Bird Flu: Many Contagious
Diseases Are
Not Preventable
Canine Influenza, also known as
"Dog Flu" is a highly contagious disease. All dogs exposed to dog flu will
get it, and about 5 to 8% of those dogs will die. THIS MEANS YOUR DOG IS
GOING TO GET SICK AND MAY DIE IF INFECTED. A vaccine is being investigated,
but experts tell us there is nothing we can do to prevent the spread of the
disease. The disease is all over California and Colorado... and is
therefore, in every place you go. It is coming here and to your town and
into your home. Even though we try to exercise caution when dealing with
dogs, we cannot prevent your dog from getting dog flu, and can't be
responsible for whether your dog gets it and you or your dog suffers as a
result. Your dog will probably get the flu from doing business with us,
or
any other doggie daycare, trainer or any kennel operation. If your dog is around other
dogs, visits places where other dogs have been, or is around people (like
myself) who come in contact with other dogs, then your dog will get dog flu
at some point. The other risk appears to be Bird Flu. Governments all over
the world are quarantining millions of infected birds and putting them to
death, to hold off a potential epidemic. There have been dogs infected which
have died already. With either disease, it is possible that the government
will quarantine, seize and put to death hundreds, thousands or millions of
our pets. In Britain, they killed millions of cattle infected with hoof and
mouth disease. So, you should figure they could also do it with our pets. Regardless
of the disease, there is probably no way that it can be prevented. Dogs can
also get a variety of other diseases, some of which are contagious. Giardia,
dog show "dog crud" (for lack of a better term... it is kind of like the
common cold in dogs), infections from scrapes / cuts / abrasions / allergies
/ bites, and all those diseases your dog should be vaccinated against, can
afflict any dog. We try to screen for healthy dogs, keep our facilities
clean, and practice safe handling, but we can't prevent the transmission of
all diseases. Many diseases are not readily apparent when you first meet a
dog, and take time to develop symptoms.
HOLD HARMLESS AND RELEASE OF LIABILITY
By making contact with us or our business associates and
friends, or doing any business with us, you fully acknowledge and understand
the risks to your dog and agree to unconditionally release and indemnify us,
our contacts and customers from any
liability and hold us
harmless from all damages in the event any dog contracts any parasite or disease
through our interactions. WE ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR DOG'S MEDICAL
BILLS OR ANY RESULTING DAMAGES FROM THESE PARASITES OR ANY DISEASE OR ITS EFFECTS! We can't
be. There is no way for us to prevent all parasites and disease... we aren't veterinarians and
modern medicine doesn't have cures or preventative measures to screen out everything. The only way you could
prevent your dog from getting a parasite or disease would be to put your dog in a
bubble, not do business with any kind of pet professional, stay in your
house 24 hours a day, don't go buy dog food from any public retailer, don't
take your dog for walks in public where birds or insects might be, etc...
which is impossible... and not very humane. Life is sometimes harsh and unfair. This is one of
those kinds of things. If you have more questions: Call your veterinarian
for more specific advice. NO DOGGIE DAYCARE, TRAINER, GROOMER, BOARDING FACILITY...
OR EVEN YOUR VETERINARIAN... CAN PREVENT 100% OF THESE PESTS.
